You do NOT NEED TO BE A PROFESSIONAL TRUCK DRIVER TO HELP MAKE AN IMPACT TOWARDS WHAT IS FAIR AND RIGHT!  Please support the men and women who Move America!  :D

As you are likely aware, Congressman Peter DeFazio (OR 4) recently introduced HR 756, a bill that would require the Department of Transportation to make it unlawful for shippers and receivers to excessively detain trucks without compensation. This bill is a huge first step in addressing the countless hours truckers are forced to give away for free each year.

As truckers know all too well, detention time is a pervasive problem that not only wastes resources, but also impacts safety as drivers sometimes feel pressured to violate hours of service requirements in order to make up lost time.   Shippers and receivers are not going to correct this problem on their own and need an incentive to start doing the right thing, which is to let that trucker get back on the road.  HR 756 will help make this happen.

Today, the Congressman circulated what is known as a “dear colleague” to all the members of the House of Representatives.  A dear colleague is a letter asking for other members to stand behind this legislation as a co-sponsor.  The more co-sponsors that sign onto a bill the better the chances a bill has to eventually “move” and be brought up for a vote.

We have come too far on this issue to let this bill sit silently with no names attached.   Every day lawmakers receive dozens of requests to sign onto pieces of legislation and we need to make this important bill stand out!   Please take the time to contact your Representative and ask him/her to “sign onto” this bill.

To contact your representative, call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121, tell the operator that you want to speak with your congressman and provide the operator with your home zip code. You can also look up that information at www.house.gov

Or course, you are also welcome to call OOIDA at (800) 444-5791. Association staff will be happy to help put you in touch with your elected officials.

Thank you for your help!

    Christy Spilotis Kuppler's Opinions

I started driving professionally in 1979, driving a full size school bus. In those days, we did not need an air brake endorsement, and the license was called "bus 1". I have also driven handicapped and wheelchair, special needs, senior citizens, and was given two mayors awards/citations from two different mayors in Woodbridge Township, NJ.
Years ago, I hosted a popular cable TV program, and won a Cable "Ace" award for breaking the record for the most viewers on a single show. I was a singer/songwriter, performer. You can see my old shows at www.christystv.com I have also driven step van...you know, like the ones that you see UPS drive. I became a T/T driver in 1996 when I became homeless due to an abusive marriege. I lived in the truck for about 9 months until I could get my life back in order.
I have worn many hats, sort of a "Jill of all Trades", master of none! lol! I blazed a trail back in the mid-80's when I became a 'hard-hat', working on crews of men, doing everything from pipe fitting, welding, torching, carpentry, basically an assistant millwright.
I had to work three times as hard to prove I was as good as the men, but I earned their respect.
I have been to hell and back more times than I can count, and I got my 'handle' of Katwoman cause I keep landing on my feet. lol! It's getting a little harder to do anymore, this kittiy is getting a little tired of the curve balls.
